The Legend Behind Masik Shivaratri

According to a myth, the legend of great samudra manthan is behind the shivaratri. Many story are having reasons behind Shivaratri but mostly hindu believe the story of samudra manthan. So let’s know the whole story of samudra manthan.
It is believed that once the devas and the asuras started churning of the great stone of ocean with the help of Naag Vasuki. When the ‘Amrita’ came out, the destructive poison also appeared in the pot with ‘Amrita’. This poison had power to ruin all over the universe. So due to fear of destruction, Devas and Asuras asked for help to lord Shiva. Therefore, loving Lord Shiva drank the whole poison in order to save the universe.He is the lord of destruction, so poison could not poisoned lord Siva but his throat became blue. From that onwards, Lord Shiva is knowing by the name of ‘Neel Kanth’.

Shivaratri is celebrated as a festival of fast and worshiping of Lord shiva in all over india. There is believe that Shivaratri is the day when Parvati as Shakti and Shiva became one. Vidhi of worshiping on Masik Shivaratri

On Masik Shivaratri, you should start your day with bathing of the water which is boiled with sesame. Then wear clean clothes and go to shivalaya. You must worship the shivling on this day. Every devotee of lord Shiva should worship shivling with bael leaves, kand phal, bhang, flower of madaar, shami leaves, datura, stone apple. First you should mix five ingredients and make panchamrit. You should offer this panchamrit first then you should offer all ingredients. You should also sweets and garlands of white flowers. You should do aarti with kapoor and also apply chandan on shivling. You should read ‘Maha Mrityunjay mantra’ and ‘Om namah shivay’. You should observe strict fast on this day and follow all rules. On next day, you can end your fast. You should follow pure falahaar on shivaratri.
